Isabel DeibelIsabel currently works for Duolingo as a Polyglot/Linguist/Curriculum Designer, where she manages a team of contractors, develops new curricula, and learns new details about languages on a daily basis. She is currently learning Japanese.
Isabel earned a MA/PhD in Hispanic Linguistics and Language Science at the Pennsylvania State University (Ph.D. Advisor: Dr. John Lipski) and completed a Master's degree in English, Spanish and German Linguistics and Literature with special emphasis on teaching at the University of Heidelberg in 2015. During her undergrad, she participated in a voluntary project in Costa Rica and spent several months in Irvine, California, observing the language contact situation between English and Spanish in the "Hispanic Southwest." Her interest in mixed languages and creoles has also brought her to places she never thought she would visit: Highland Ecuador and Palenque, Colombia! She has also been involved in humanitarian projects as a member of Rotaract, not only as a board member in various positions, such as web master or club president, but also as an Assitant Rotaract District Representative (District 1860). From 2014 to 2015, she contributed to the project "Boys&Books" (www.boysandbooks.de) as a reviewer of youth literature. At Penn State, she was secretary of the SIPGSO (Spanish, Italian, Portuguese Graduate Student Organization) and organizer of PSUxLING3 and PSUxLING4. She also regularly participates in "Bilingualism Matters" outreach events.
